The Foundry Complex

The Foundry Complex
Providence, Rhode Island

The Foundry Complex, in downtown Providence, is a good example of how an older industrial complex can be renovated to revitalize an urban area. Weisman continues a process of repair and commercial roofing in phases on multiple levels totaling 200,000 sq. ft. to date at this older industrial complex.

Access to the roof areas of this renovated apartment complex was very difficult. Some sections are high and others are rather difficult to reach. Weisman systematically removed the old roofing, including some multiple roofing systems applied over each other and coal-tar-pitch assemblies, to expose the wooden and concrete decks underneath.

Over the years modified bitumen or tar and gravel built-up commercial roofing systems were then applied on the different building sections. Each section’s roofing system gets a 12 or 20-year warranty.

Modified bitumen roofing is lighter than built-up tar and gravel roofing and is appropriate for older wooden roof decks. Additionally, because access is difficult in some areas, one requirement for this project was that any future repair should be simple – modified bitumen roofing systems meet this requirement. Modified bitumen peel and stick base sheets, combined with cold applied adhesives, ensured that work progressed quickly, and with minimum disruption.
