Roger Williams Zoo

Roger Williams Zoo
Education Center
Providence, Rhode Island

The Roger Williams Zoo, an American Zoological Association (AZA) accredited zoo, which opened in 1872, is home to many exotic animals and was in need of a new metal roof for its Education Center, however the organization’s budget was not sufficient for a relatively costly metal commercial roofing system.

The Education Center is a unique structure, and the finished “look” of the building was important. Having carefully examined the building and its long-term roofing requirements, Weisman Roofing value engineered a comparable commercial roofing system, with similar characteristics to a metal roof but using less expensive yet durable commercial roofing system components.

Weisman's design consisted of colored PVC single-ply membrane, with matching colored PVC coated wooden battens. This gave the esthetic appearance of a batten seam metal roof, but without the expense of the metal. And, it offered the durability of a heat welded PVC single-ply membrane commercial roofing system.

PVC single-ply membrane provides long lasting water resistance because of its flexibility and heat welded seams. In the unlikely event of a problem, the material is also straightforward to repair. PVC roofing is resistant to thermal changes, roof top dirt and environmental pollution.
