The University of Rhode Island has a world renowned Biological Science Center, which opened in 1972. This building has a very distinctive curved shape with a relatively steep pitched roof.

When the original roof was in need of replacement, Weisman Roofing was confronted with the “non-standard” shape of the structure’s roof.

A site visit showed that it was not practical to repair, or directly re-cover the existing roofing system. So, Weisman designed a radical “new covering” approach. Weisman first removed the existing roofing system, and then installed a new 2x6 wooden grid over the top of the underlying roof structure. Then, Weisman in-filled the grid sections with commercial roofing insulation. Then a CertainTeed built-up modified bitumen commercial roofing system was installed on top.

CertainTeed has a range of commercial roofing products suitable for high-slope roofs. The materials are low weight, but have a high resistance to the weather, including high winds, UV radiation and chemical pollutants. Its 20-year warranty built-up modified bitumen commercial roofing system was a good choice for URI’s Bio-Science Building.
